Suburban Health Organization (SHO) is mid-way through the third Physician Leadership Series (PLS). Healthcare reform has positioned hospitals and physicians to collaborate in bringing medicine and management together. SHO has gathered national and local experts to provide physicians and advance practice providers with an introduction to financial, strategic, and leadership topics over an 18-month program. The program consists of nine sessions focused on providing the knowledge and resources necessary to lead effectively and improve patient outcomes. Examples of topics include population health, value-based purchasing, emotional intelligence, leadership tools, continuous improvement, human resource pitfalls, strategic planning, finance, negotiation, informatics, analytics, patient safety, risk management, and health law. In addition to engaging in this interactive series, participants work in teams to develop quality improvement projects to benefit their hospitals, thus improving patient outcomes. These projects will be presented to an audience of their peers, hospital CEOs, and other healthcare leaders during the final session.
This series includes physicians and advance practice providers from Goshen Health, Hancock Health, Hendricks Regional Health, Major Health Partners, Margaret Mary Health, and Witham Health Services. SHO’s PLS kicked off in 2015 and was offered again in 2017. Nineteen graduates from six SHO member hospitals (Hancock Health, Hendricks Regional Health, Henry Community Health, Johnson Memorial Health, Riverview Health, and Witham Health Services) successfully completed the first series in 2016 with a total of 54.25 continuing medical education (CME) credits offered. In 2017, SHO opened the series up to include advance practice providers and offered 53.5 CMEs. Twenty-two graduates from Hancock Health, Henry Community Health, Major Health Partners, Riverview Health, Rush Memorial, and Witham Health Services successfully completed the second series in June 2018. PLS Graduates have an opportunity to complete an MBA degree with a focus on Medical Management at a reduced rate and transfer of credits through SHO’s partnership with the Isenberg School of Management’s Online MBA program.
