J.D. Bowman Recognized as SHO’s Indianapolis Coalition for Patient Safety Hero

Congratulations to John ‘J.D.’ Bowman, RPh., Chief Quality Officer and Director of Pharmacy at Morgan Hospital &  Medical Center,  who was recognized as SHO’s 2009 Indianapolis Coalition for Patient Safety’s (ICPS) Hero.  Every year, ICPS asks each member hospital system to nominate a Patient Safety Hero, individual or group of individuals, that has championed a specific safety project.  This year SHO selected J.D. for implementing a hospital medication safety program, Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE) along side evidenced based standard order sets, and medication protocols,  all designed to enhance patient safety and care delivered.

J.D. has proactively coordinated, with multidisciplinary teams, efforts to improve patient safety through:

  • Implementation of a hospital-wide medication safety program, which integrates barcode technology, electronic medical records and the medication dispensing system, resulting in the ability to:
    • Verify medications at the patient’s bedside, and
    • Prevent medication errors
  • Implementation of Computerized Physician Order Entry and standardized order sets utilizing evidence-based medicine
  • Implementation of various medication protocols designed to enhance patient care.

J.D. received his B.S. degree from the Purdue University School of Pharmacy. Prior to joining the team of professionals in his leadership role at Morgan Hospital & Medical Center in 2004, he worked as a Clinical Pharmacist and/or Information Systems Pharmacist for hospitals in Missouri and Indiana.

Since being founded in 2003, the Indianapolis Coalition for Patient Safety provides a forum for Indianapolis-area hospitals to share information about 'best practices' and work together to solve patient safety issues in Indianapolis and surrounding county hospitals.
